When you think of ultralight bass fishing during the dog days of June, you tend to only want to go fishing during the early morning, or early evening. These times are just more comfortable for me, and for most other fishermen (and women!) as well. What you don't realize though, is that you are missing out on prime bass fishing time!
One of the most prominent ultralight bass fishing styles is throwing topwater baits. Lures like the buzzbaits, poppers, spooks, minnows, etc. This article will cover the buzzbaits, and poppers, as these two lures have claimed more fish lips than any other topwater lures combined.
Early in the morning, or earlier in the evening, just after the sun has settled in, and your eyes adjust to the change is the best time to apply topwater in mid summer. Choosing the right bait to use at the right time is the key to landing more fish.
With the water heating up to uncomfortable conditions this time of year, the bass tend to not chase baits actively during the day. This is why waiting until the water cools down to use the faster moving baits is key.
On bright sunny days with no clouds however, fish can't look up for their food. When these conditions present themselves, switch to a bottom bouncing bait that will better get the attention of the bass. Worms and jigs are perfect when the sun is high.
Jigs and worms are two of the best baits for when conditions present you with a bright sunny sky. After all, you don't get to pick when you fish! Worms and jigs can be slow rolled on the bottom, bounced, hopped, jigged, create a ruckus, just keep testing to find out what the fish are looking for. Remember to bring along your patience!
