Raise the Red Lantern: Striking reenactment of the life of a young concubine in 1920's China, as university educated gal (Gong Li) is sent to feudal nobleman's palatial home to become his latest spouse. The relations between her and her predecessors, all of whom live on the premises. The interaction amid the ladies, the servants, and their master are brilliantly played out. The film provides an exceptional view of sex, dependability, and captivity during that time. Cast includes Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Caifei, Cao Cuifeng, Jin Shuyuan, Kong Lin, Ding Weimin, and Cui Zhihgang. (125 minutes, 1991)
Deliverance: This is an excellent re-creation of the Dickey novel of 4 Atlanta businessmen who get more than they can handle throughout a weekend canoe trip. McKinney and Coward are 2 of the most horrifying film scoundrels in history. The "Dueling Banjos" scene is very memorable. Film debuts of Beatty and Cox. James Dickey adjusted his own novel, and appears in the film as a sheriff. Ed O'Neill appears as a freeway watcher near end of film. Nuts: Gripping drama in regards to a belligerent female designated an appointed attorney who should fight for her right to stand trial for manslaughter, while both the state and her own parents demand that she's not in her right mind. Cast includes Barbra Streisand, Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, and Hayley Taylor Block. (116 minutes, 1987)
Ruby Gentry: Turgid, strolling account of a simple Southerner (Jones) wedding the wealthy Malden to spite Heston, the guy she really loves. Cast includes Jennifer Jones, Charlton Heston, Karl Malden, and Josephine Hutchinson. (82 minutes, 1952)
Airplane: Extremely ludicrous spoof of Airport with a nonstop amount of gags that keeps up almost to the end. Our top choice: the bizarre plight of Lt. Hurwitz.
